About Us:

Who Are We?

We are an intentional congregation of United Methodists in the Ravenna-Bryant neighborhood of Northeast Seattle. We have a history of reaching out to those who might have felt unwelcomed elsewhere or, who might have been unable to fully participate in the life and membership of their previous church. Many of those who participate find here a church community that takes seriously the two great commandments Jesus Christ taught, to not only "love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind", but to also "love your neighbor as yourself".

We are a welcoming community that values inclusiveness and hospitality. We are members of both the Reconciling Ministries Network (RMN) and Safe Schools Coalition. Gay, lesbian, and trangendered persons are valued members of our church membership and leadership.  Our doors are open to all who enter.

We are an active and involved church community. We seek opportunities to minister to those in need and interact with the community around us (e.g. The Theodora House, St. Ignatius Catholic Communion (ECC), the North End Interfaith Community). We also are involved in many causes and missions around the world, through our individual efforts (Ravenna Reconciling Ministries, Red Doors, Roots, Church of Mary Magdalene, University Food Bank, Kaaga Children's Home, TDORSeattle, among others) or jointly through our apportionments supporting the larger United Methodist Church outreach programs, such as UMCOR.

The history of our faith and action spans some 110 years. We plan to continue making history!

We are also a church community that seeks new ways of learning and of educating ourselves. Seattle Most Dangerous Sunday School (SMDSS), our popular and well-attended ecumenical Sunday Adult Education/Bible Study and discussion group, is a fresh approach to our gaining a better understanding and insight as to who God is and what our roles as disciples and followers of Jesus Christ are, and what does all of this mean anyway. We are eager to ask questions as well as uncover new answers. Our journey is just that... a journey. And, we are the explorers, the discoverers of what information exists, has been lost or hidden, and what might or can be uncovered and revealed through careful and insightful study, analysis, faith, and prayer.

We invite you to share with us in celebration and/or outreach. Come visit -- you are welcome.

We Believe:

Ravenna UMC, together with other congregations of the Pacific Northwest Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, have declared our support for the Constitutional Amendment to Paragraph Four, Article IV of the United Methodist Constitution that includes all people in the life, leadership and rites of the church. Believing ALL MEANS ALL, our congregation welcomes persons of all ages, races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities, economic conditions, marital status, mental or physical abilities to attend, join, and participate fully in the life of our congregation. Such belief advances our United Methodist mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our Vision/Mission Statement:

We are a community of Christians committed to: sharing God's saving love with all we meet; becoming a community that affirms and challenges, comforts and confronts, welcomes and sends forth. We are an open, affirming, and theologically inclusive congregation. We take comfort in knowing that we can agree to disagree; that our first responsibility is to love.

Our Motto:

Open hearts. Open minds. Open doors. Open to All.
